JOURNAL #20

1 AUGUST 2007      SOLDOTNA TO SEWARD

The leg to Seward is only 90 miles and there are no schedule constraints, so we watched all the other cars leave before completing our packing. Then we left with our car in the lead. I set a pace of about 45 MPH. At Moose Pass we stopped for a rest break and had coffee and raspberry muffins. Then it was on to Seward. I had been here once before — in January 1952. It was cold then. The family had come down from Anchorage on the train and we got on a Military Sea Transport ship bound for San Francisco after my two-year tour at Elmendorf AFB. I don’t remember much about the town. It is the terminus of the Alaska Railroad and a military port. Then, that was all there was. Now, it is also a recreational spot with plenty of tourists and fishermen.

Once we checked into the hotel, we found a nice restaurant overlooking the boat harbor and had a late and filling lunch. (We plan to eat in our rooms this evening.) We have an early date with a local cruise boat and find the parking at the hotel to be limited. We will have to check out before going on the cruise, so Jim Baker arranged for us to park in a restricted area in the hotel's lot while we do the cruise. This required that most of us had to move our cars now and cluster them in a smaller space. My car’s starter was stuck and the starter bolts had to be loosened and the car “rocked” by pushing back and forth to “unstick” the starter. Good thing that it happened now, instead of in the morning when we will have limited time.

Tomorrow is the last day of our “land tour.” We drive to Whittier and board the ferry for an 8:00 PM departure.
