GO SOMEWHERE ELSE?
JOURNAL #7
18 JULY 2007 HAINES JUNCTION TO BEAVER CREEK
I was up and dressed early to get a picture of the rising sun shinning on the mountains to the west. They tell us that these mountains are normally covered with clouds. We have been treated with wonderfully clear weather and enjoy the scenery very much.
We will leave this morning after a breakfast at a little bakery nearby. This village is no more than a few buildings (one being the gas station) clustered about the junction of the Alaska Highway and the road from Haines, Alaska, where the ferry and other ships dock. We are looking forward to trying out the bakery, which was highly recommended by some members of our group who ate there least night.
It is now almost 7 o’clock and I hear a number of Model A engines running and the odor of exhaust gas is evident through the open door of our second story apartment. The air is a bit brisk — you can see the condensation of your breath, but the day holds the promise of good weather.
With the Olsons, we got away from the motel at 8:30 and found the bakery and had a light breakfast. Jo and I had a very good quiche. Then we were away for Beaver Creek. Broken clouds were forming along the mountains and the air was warm. We hit a major construction project along the lake, but only had to wait about five minutes, as the line had started forming some time before we arrived. We gassed up at Burwash Landing and went to the lodge for a snack and to use their rest rooms. Some of the others of our party had arrived before us and were at the museum. When we left the lodge we checked and they were already gone. We drove for about 30 minutes and caught up with them and drove a ways with them. After 30 minutes we stopped beside a nice little lake for a breather. Then back on the road. The road was bumpy in places where the frost had heaved the pavement. Many places had but not too smoothly. There was considerable gravel road which was relatively smooth, but dusty. It had been watered recently in some places. We arrived at the motel shortly after noon and checked in.
The mosquitoes are quite numerous and I found that our spray seemed to be effective. While I was working at the computer and connected to the Internet, they seemed to be eating me. After using the spray, I was left alone most of the time!
In the evening we attended a dinner theater — the Beaver Creek Rendezvous. It was a clever musical and the main actors were good and had nice voices. In all, it was an enjoyable experience.
So ended another day of our adventure.
