MOSHER TOUR PAGE 6
Alaska – Entry #6
July 5
(07/06/07)
Left Tok, Alaska, on Saturday, June 30th, for Dawson City, Yukon Territory, Canada. Our drive was 185 miles. We had heard that the roads were rough all the way to the Canadian border. Yes, they were rough, but not as bad as the drive to Prudhoe Bay.
Our first stop was Chicken, AK (population in summer 21 and winter 6). There are no flush toilets, just portables. These were very clean and even had deodorizers in them. Not quite like the ones at the rest stops along the highway! We were on the Taylor Highway to Dawson City.
Dawson City is across the Yukon River. The only way to get across is on a Ferry. The ferry is free since it only runs during the summer. The city is very quaint with lots of shops
The next morning we participated in their “Canada Day” parade. The parade ran down Front Street and down to their museum. Everyone was excited to see our cars. That evening we went to the famous “Diamond Tooth Gerties” gambling hall. We saw a fun show.
The next morning we headed 221 miles to Carmacks, Yukon Territory. Again, it was a small town and we stayed in the only hotel. Nothing fancy, but adequate for our needs. The following day we traveled 206 miles to Teslin, Yukon Territory. Our hotel was along the Teslin River. See the bridge reflection in the picture.
Today we traveled 206 miles to Watson Lake, Yukon Territory. This town was a real disappointment, but the only town that had accommodations. We are leaving early in the morning to travel 330 miles o Fort Nelson, British Columbia.
Ron and I are the lead car, and I have been on “wildlife” watch for quite awhile. We are told that tomorrow we will finally see our bears, elk, deer, etc. Keep your eyes out for all my pictures coming up!
The cars are doing fine, with just some minor repairs along the way. The scenery continues to be beautiful. Looking forward to arriving in Calgary in 5 days.
Talk to you soon, Carol and Ron.
